Read-a-thon Hour 1!

I’m so excited to start my second read-a-thon!

I have a stack of 10 books by my desk that I’ll be choosing from today:
Great House by Nicole Krauss (finishing this one – less than 50 pages left)
Woman Hollering Creek by Sandra Cisneros
Maus by Art Spiegelman
Proust’s Overcoat by Lorenza Foschini
Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by David Sedaris
The Recipe Club by Andrea Israel & Nancy Garfinkel
Everything is Going to Be Great by Rachel Shukert
Translations by Brian Friel
The Lovers by Marguerite Duras
Half Empty by David Rakoff

I’ll start out my blog posting today with a meme from the Read-a-thon blog:

Where are you reading from today? Hoboken, New Jersey

3 facts about me … I love tacos, I love fall, and I’m an Michigan State University Alum rooting for the SPARTANS today.

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours? 10. They are short, but I’m being ambitious. :)

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)? I would like to finish at least 5 books.

If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, any advice for people doing this for the first time? Coffee, Coffee Coffee!

  1. I just discovered your blog last week through another blog and I must say I LOVE IT. It’s my new favorite book blog which is saying a lot, because I read a lot of them! Spent waaay too much time last week reading through your old posts, writing down book titles, & wishing we were friends! ha! I’ve never found someone with reading tastes so incredibly close to mine! Anyways, I have a question. What is a read-a-thon? Obviously you are reading for ____ amount of hours uninterrupted, but is this something you do on your own, like “Today I have nothing to do! I’ll have a read-a-thon!” Or is this event in which other people are doing it the same day? Hope it’s not obvious and I’m missing it, I’m way out of it technology-wise. Keep up the great work! :)

    1. Hi Megan! That’s so awesome to hear, I’m so glad you found my blog! :) I’d love to hear more about what your favorite books and authors are, since we have such similar reading taste! Are you on Shelfari, or anything similar?

The Read-a-thon is a virtual event called Dewey’s Read-a-thon (http://24hourreadathon.com/). It started in 2008, but last year was the first year I heard about it and participated. I think over 400 people signed up this year! It’s very fun, publishers & bloggers donate a lot of prizes, and there are all sorts of giveaways and mini-challenges you can enter to win them. There are also “Cheerleaders” who focus on visiting participating blogs and leaving comments to cheer them on. It started at 8am today, and goes through 8 am tomorrow morning. I’m not sure how long I’ll make it tonight, but I’ll keep going for as long as I can. :)

what do you think?
