Photo diary of my trip

Ryan had to stay in NY during my recent trip to Michigan and the road trip to Milwaukee, so I had fun keeping him updated on what I was up to by sending him photos from my iPhone. I think the collection is a decent summary of the trip – though it skews a little food heavy, since food tends to be happily photogenic. I’ll do a separate post with better (ie not taken on the iPhone) photos from the James Taylor concert too.

Valentines, Presidents, and James Taylor

I’m heading to Michigan tonight for a long weekend with my family, and will return next week. Hopefully with a few more books read to post about.

I hope you all have a great Valentine’s Day and a wonderful President’s Day weekend!

In honor of Valentine’s Day, here’s one of my favorite love songs, James Taylor’s version of How Sweet it is to be Loved By You:

Off to Michigan!

In a little while I’ll be heading home to Michigan! We’re driving, so hopefully we can make it home between snowstorms. Ryan and I usually drive home for Christmas, and this year will be nice because we’ll have more people to split the driving up with – my friend Jenn is here visiting along with her boyfriend and her 10 year old sister.

So Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year everyone! I might update from Michigan, but I’m not sure yet. I’m hoping to stay fairly internet free and focus on time with family, friends, and reading.

I’ll be back after the new year with updates on books accumulated and read over the holidays, photos from Michigan, and more. I’ll also post my 2008 Books and Reading Recap, and hopefully have time to do a 2008 version of my “Which of Emily’s Favorite Books Read in 2007 Should You Read?” flow chart. Also on the horizon: reading goals for 2009.

Enjoy the season everyone! See you in 2009! :)

Michigan!

I’ll be mostly absent from Vox for a little while. I’m headed home to Michigan to see my Mom, Dad, and little brother Ben.

I’ll probably still read my Neighborhood page while I’m online at home, but not planning on any posts of my own.

I’m bringing three books with me:
-A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz
-The Journal of Jules Renard
-The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell

I’m also bringing this week’s New Yorker, the Entertainment Weekly Fall TV preview from a few weeks ago, and the current Mental Floss magazine.

I expect to bring many more books back with me. Tomorrow my Mom and I are going shopping at the Friends of the Library bookstore, and I’ll be getting birthday presents early, on Sunday. I’ll post about new books when I return. :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Pleasant Peninsula

It’s 4:30 am, and I’m up, showered, and eating breakfast. Oy.

However, it’s all for a good cause – a trip home. Today I leave for a long weekend in Michigan. I’m very excited!

I did not get a chance to update last night with my June Polysyllabic Spree post, but I’ll do that as soon as I return.

I’m bringing five books home with me for travel reading and hammock reading. Here are a few of them:
The Code of the Woosters by P. G. Wodehouse
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
American Bloomsbury by Susan Cheever

I’m also excited because this is my first flight with my new noise reducing headphones. And my first flight with my Nintendo DS, actually. I will be well entertained.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! If you celebrate the fourth of July, I hope it’s safe, fun, and full of delicious food, preferably off the grill.

Picture Post

Just a few pictures from my trip(s) to Michigan earlier this month. Michigan was absolutely gorgeous, especially up north. The trees are incredible. I miss Michigan in the fall.

And here’s a picture of the most relaxing afternoon in the world: reading in the hammock in our backyard:
