This book is So. Much. Fun. I read it during the very busy time leading up to our wedding celebration when I needed something that was light, distracting, and a lot of fun. I devoured it in about 24 hours. Jessi Klein offers up a collection of essays on subjects such as dating, The Bachelor, being a tom-boy (or, when a tom-boy grows up and doesn’t outgrow it, a Tom Man), getting older, getting married, infertility, having a baby, and a lot of life concerns in between.
I recognize that a huge part of my love for this book is how strongly I relate to Jessi Klein. Many women will, and surely many others won’t. Being of a similar social and demographic background as Jessi definitely contributes to me residing solidly in the “will” camp. She also feels that there are two types of women: Poodles and Wolves, and that she is a wolf. She lists characteristics of both types, and every single item on the wolf list is true for me. So to say that I identified with Jessi Klein is probably an understatement.
If you’re wondering if you will relate to her too, you can probably pick up a copy of this book in a bookstore, flip through the pages, and know in about 30 seconds whether you’ll love it or not. That’s how I felt on the floor of Book Expo when I grabbed it. (Despite the fact that Jessi Klein is fairly well known in the comedy world and is the head writer on Inside Amy Schumer, she was somehow not on my radar until I saw this book.)
Here’s a bit from the spot-on section about Anthropologie:
“But Anthropologie is selling more than just nostalgia. They’re selling a fantasy about making yourself into a certain kind of girlfriend. The girlfriend you meet in the most magical places. You meet her at an outdoor market in Marrakesh where she is buying a little bell to hang in her window. Or maybe you’re at a wine bar early on a Tuesday and she’s the girl seated in the corner, in a kangaroo sweater, writing in her journal.”
Pick this one up if you need a delightful escape, a diverting travel companion, a slump-busting page turner, or a book that makes you giggle.
