Short Book Review: The Eyre Affair

The Eyre Affair
Jasper Fforde

While mourning the loss of new Harry Potter books to look forward to, I decided I needed a new series to read. Not expecting anything to fill the Harry Potter shaped whole in my heart, but I figured it’d be fun to get into another series. {Enter Jasper Fforde and Thursday Next}

The Eyre Affair is like dessert for book lovers. It takes place in an alternate universe – one where books, literature, and authors are as popular as sports are in our world. Our hero is Thursday Next, who is actually quite similar in character to Jane Eyre herself. She’s practical, brave, smart, independent, and modest.

The plot is action packed and has many fun characters – Jasper’s as well as other author’s. (I actually wrote them all down, and filled up two pages of notebook paper.) I did not want to put this book down, and am very happy that there are four more Thursday Next books already written and ready for me to enjoy.

I most definitely recommend this book, especially when you’re in the mood to read something fun. (Also, you don’t have to have read Jane Eyre before reading The Eyre Affair, but it definitely makes it more fun.)

Links for 07.30.07

Kate Spade’s website has three awesome desktop wallpapers for book lovers. They feature beautiful old book covers. You can go to the site and click “Downloads” or you can click directly to them here, here, and here. It’s inspired me to design my own desktop background with my favorite covers, but I’m sure it won’t turn out as fantastic. {Found on How About Orange}

Betsy Dunlap has the most gorgeous calligraphy samples I’ve ever seen. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I think this one is it. {found on Design*Sponge}

So, so true. {Comic found by Ryan}

I love these Gothic paper plates. So charming! {found on Mighty Goods}

The Simpsons Movie

Yesterday Ryan and I braved the rainstorm and went to see The Simpsons Movie in Times Square. We went to the AMC in Times Square so that after the movie we could go to the Kwik-e-Mart (7/11 in disguise) and partake of their delicious “movie tie-in” doughnuts and squishees.

The movie was great. I was really looking forward to this movie, and it does not disappoint. It’s a great story, and very funny. I read several interesting articles about the making of the movie, in Vanity Fair and Entertainment Weekly, and I thought it was so interesting that part of why it took so long to make this movie is that Jim Brooks and Matt Groening wanted a contract where they would receive funds to commission the script to be written, but if they didn’t like it, they didn’t have to make the movie. That’s so cool. It finally took some guy at Fox to say that if Matt and Jim don’t want to make the movie, Fox shouldn’t either.

Anyway, here’s a picture of the doughnuts. I wanted to get a picture of the outside of the store, but it was pouring and I didn’t want to take out my camera. Maybe I’ll have to go back on a sunny day and get more of their delicious doughnuts.

John Mayer/Ben Folds

This past tuesday I saw John Mayer and Ben Folds at the PNC Bank Arts Center with Laura. It was an incredible concert. We had seats in row 5, which is by far the closest I’ve ever been at a John Mayer concert. It was the fifth time I’ve seen John, and the third time I’ve seen Ben. I’m beginning to be a bit of a John Mayer Deadhead.

This was a dream concert for me, two of my very favorite musicians in one go. And it was great. However, the Ben Folds part was a bit of a letdown. The crowd wasn’t very into him, not like at his own shows where people stand and sing the entire time. And he didn’t play any of my favorite songs, or much old stuff. The highlight though, was him doing a cover of one of my favorite songs, “Such Great Heights.”  The photo above is him playing keyboard during that song.  It was great to see him again, but I definitely prefer him at his own shows where he can really shine.

It was incredible to finally be close enough to the stage to see John Mayer clearly. He was extremely entertaining, as always, and talked a lot. His set list was awesome – all songs that I really like. And I love when he does Stop This Train acoustic. Set list:

Belief
No Such Thing
I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You)
Good Love is On the Way
Bigger Than My Body
Dreaming With A Broken Heart
Waiting on the World to Change
I Don’t Need No Doctor
Clarity
Vultures
Why Georgia
Gravity

– encore –
Slow Dancing (acoustic)
Stop This Train (acoustic)
I’m Gonna Find Another You

I took some video clips with my digital camera, and was surprised how good the sound turned out; you can hear the music pretty well, and not much of the crowd. Probably because I was four feet away from the giant speakers and could feel the bass vibrating my lungs. Anyway – for anyone interested, there’s a video clip embedded below, and more photos on my Flickr page. And here are links to YouTube of the other clips I took:

Complete At Last

Had to post this too…I get giddy when I think about how this shelf is finally complete. And sad. Oy.

(Actually, if you want to be technical, it won’t really be complete until I pick up a paperback of Deathly Hallows and get my Chamber of Secrets paperback back from my mom. But close enough.)

HP7 & The Eyre Affair

yes hi hello! Despite finishing Harry Potter on Saturday, my internet absence went on a little longer than I intended when I forgot to pack my powerbook’s power cord in Michigan. But ahoy – it arrived in the mail today thanks to a timely mailing by my dad.

I don’t want to post any spoilers here, and most of my book club friends can read my comments on our boards. But I loved it. I thought it was a perfect conclusion.

The release party at Barnes and Noble was fun. Lots of great costumes. My favorite was Cornelious Fudge, complete with pinstripe robes, who went around to all the Dumbledores and Harry Potters and yelled “Lies! Lies! The Dark Lord has not returned!” And at midnight things turned absolutely crazy. It was a stampede to the front each time a new group of numbers were called. But we managed to make it out of there by 12:35. Many people were there until 3 or 4, I’m sure.

Now I’m reading The Eyre Affair. This has been on my TBR list for a long time. It’s also on my Summer Reading List, which is looking staggeringly unaccomplished considering it’s the end of July. It’s hard to stick to a pre-chosen list for yourself.

After this, I also want to start reading Alexander McCall Smith’s #1 Ladies Detective Agency books. I’m counting on loving them, and the Thursday Next books too. It would be nice to have a series to get into again.

Harry Potter Weekend

I’m headed toward home for Harry Potter weekend! Just wanted to update quickly and pledge that this Vox will stay spoiler free. I may post pictures and talk about the event itself, but will not ruin any fun for anyone else.

Have a great weekend!

Books Update

I found a few treasures at Strand last week.

Truman Capote: In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances, and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career, by George Plimpton.

I’ve recently discovered Truman Capote’s writing, and have become fascinated by his interesting personality and life. I’ve started reading this oral biography of his life, and am completely delighted. It’s very interesting to read personal stories told by people who knew him. George Plimpton (another one of my favorite writers) presents many accounts by a large variety of people. Some stories contradict other stories. It’s terrific; I love it. It also makes me even more curious about Harper Lee. I’d like to read Mockingbird, a recent biography of her, but I’m doubtful of how intimate it can be when she absolutely refuses any interviews or publicity of any kind.

The Crack-Up by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Excited to finally own this. It includes many small miscellaneous writings. Many are just sentences or paragraphs. It sort of feels like reading his sudden bursts of thought as is – before he turns them into a short story or novel.

It also includes many letters to and from many other famous writers – Gertrude Stein, Edith Wharton, T.S. Eliot, Thomas Wolfe.

A great book to pick up and browse through when you want a small dose of literary inspiration.

A Gentle Madness: Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes, and the Eternal Passion for Books, by Nicholas A. Basbanes

I hadn’t heard of this book before a friend recommended it to me. Mainly it’s about people who are just as crazy, and yes – even crazier, than I am about collecting and reading books. Haven’t read much yet, just skimmed it enough to know that it looks excellent. Should be an interesting read.

I found it at Strand for only $8. It has an absolutely gorgeous cover with gold embossing. Very appropriate for a book about book collecting to be a great piece for your collection itself.

Chip Kidd: Book One: Work: 1986-2006 by Chip Kidd

I love book design, and am one of the many who think Chip Kidd is one of the best designers ever. I’ve only scratched the surface of browsing through this book, but I love it already. It shows pictures of the covers he’s designed, and a few paragraphs of info by Chip of how and why he did each design. The most fun though, are the random extras scattered around in abundance – faxes from the authors to Chip, rejected covers, etc. I could spend hours with my nose in this book. Another bonus: the copy I found is signed by Chip.

I also love that Chip reads all books before he designs the cover. That can be rare in the business.

Currently Reading:

The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy

Appropriate for this particular post, I found my copy of this book for $5 at Strand last year. I’m enjoying it, but it’s taking me a long time to read. Most of that is due to how busy I’ve been with my family visiting, but I’m beginning to realize it wasn’t the best choice to read while busy. Something lighter would have been much better. I’m reading this book pretty slow, partly because of the writing style, and partly because if I don’t I get a bit confused. A large reason for that is simply not being familiar with the names in the book, so it takes me longer to remember who people are.

But it’s a great book so far – I’m about halfway through. I love her style, though I do have to read it carefully. I’ve heard great things about this book, and am excited to finish.

Last – but absolutely not least: I am so excited for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows next week.
